Grand Isle State Park Reopens

Nearly two years after category 4 Hurricane Ida pounded Louisiana’s only inhabited barrier island, Grand Isle State Park has reopened to visitors. The park opened June 1, 2023 for day use and camping.

The park’s campground has been used in recent months to house residents whose homes were badly damaged by the hurricane. Now, the campground is open for overnight stays for campers and RVs. The park has 45 premium pull-through campsites. Each site has water and electric hookups. You can make reservations online.

The park has long been a popular spot for families wanting to spend a day at the beach. You will frequently find fishermen casting a line as they wade into the Gulf surf. Others visitors enjoy crabbing and hunting for seashells along the shoreline.

still a work in progress

One of the two bathhouses at the state park has reopened for those spending the day at the beach. But the park’s iconic 900-foot-long fishing pier that extended over the Gulf was severely damaged by Hurricane Ida. It remains closed pending major repairs.

This video was shot May 23, just one week before the state park’s reopening. Park crews were cutting grass, removing debris and cleaning the beach to prepare for the return of visitors. You can see that the campground and RV park is in great shape.
