Nestled at the end of the road, due south from New Iberia along the shoreline of Vermilion Bay, lies Cypremort Point State Park. Known for its rich fishing grounds, this park has become a favored spot for those looking to catch Louisiana’s popular saltwater fish without the need for a boat.
fishing and more without a boat
Park manager Waylon King says, “There’s no need to have a boat when you come out here to fish. You could fish along the coastline. You could also crab as well”. The fishing areas along the bay are now concrete, replacing a storm-damaged wooden fishing pier. There is also seating and a shaded pavilion for anglers.

I find Brad Wonderling casting a line as he sits along the sandy shoreline of the bay. Wonderling confirms he’s catching a few fish, “just a couple of mullets and whatever that last one was.” The last one was a sheepshead. Wonderling tells me he’s new to saltwater fishing.
new campground for rv’s at cypremort point
Wonderling has just signed on as the campground host for Cypremort Point’s new RV park. “We’ve had people driving through every day asking when we’re gonna open”, Wonderling explains. He adds, “So they’re ready out here. They’re ready for a new park”. Cypremort Point just added its first campground, 22 paved spaces with complete hookups for RVs.
Wonderling says the new sites are beautiful, “brand spanking new,” he says, adding “and everyone’s got a view of the beach.” Those campers will also have a view of the sunsets, which can be an incredible site over the bay.

new wetland boardwalk and wildlife viewing
The park also has a new quarter-mile-long boardwalk through a wetland area. It’s a place for relaxing and looking for wildlife. King tells me it’s possible to see a variety of animals making their way through the grassy marsh area, including beaver, nutria, river otter, white-tailed deer, raccoons and opossums. And be on the lookout for an occasional alligator.
catching bull redfish from the pier
But the main attraction here is the fish, and you can hook a big one. I walked up to the pier just as Daron Clement’s reel started humming. The Breaux Bridge native had just hooked a large bull redfish. After spending several minutes reeling in the stubborn fish, Clement was able to lift the fish out of the water in a net. The bull red was nearly twice as long as Clement’s ice chest. It was an impressive catch! Clement tells me the fishing is “pretty efficient” at the state park, explaining that he can catch a good amount of bait with a cast net.
