Poverty Point Cabins at Sunset

The sunset view from the back deck of the Poverty Point cabins is amazing. It’s the perfect way to end of day of fishing, swimming or hiking at this north Louisiana State Park.

Poverty Point Reservoir State Park has 8 cabins that stand above the water of the 2,700 acre man-made lake. The reservoir is popular with fishermen who can use the park’s boat launch and spend the day casting for largemouth bass and other freshwater species. And if you are spending the night in one of the vacation cabins, you can fish off your deck.

And if you enjoy exploring the wooded landscape, hike the Macon Ridge Trail for an easy nature walk. The trail takes you deep into the woods for birdwatching and spotting wildlife, including the Louisiana black bear. In addition to the 8 waterfront vacation cabins, the state park has more than 50 campsites.

Ancient history at poverty point

The state park also features several ancient native mounds. As you drive into the campground, you pass an elevated grassy plateau with a historical marker. The highest mound is 13 feet tall and was built between 1,000 and 2,000 years ago.

Poverty Point Reservoir State Park is located 15 minutes from the Poverty Point World Heritage Site. Dozens of steps take you to the top of the 72-foot high Mound A, the centerpiece of this ancient mound complex. Poverty Point’s earthworks were part of Louisiana’s first major “city” that was constructed 3,400 years ago.
