Bayou Segnette State Park

You can spend the night in a cabin floating on the water in Louisiana’s Bayou Segnette State Park. Located at the edge of a cypress swamp and grassy marsh, this state park is only a 15-minute drive from downtown New Orleans.

It’s hard to believe that this nearly 700-acre southern Louisiana wilderness is so close to the state’s largest metropolitan area. But at Bayou Segnette State Park in Westwego, you can launch your fishing boat and run only a short distance to prime fishing spots in the nearby canals and marshes. And if you stay in one of the park’s 16 vacation cabins, you can tie up your boat to your cabin.

Flooding from Hurricane Katrine in 2005 heavily damaged the original cabins at Bayou Segnette State Park. The destruction from the storm also revealed significant damage from termites. So the state parks came up with a unique design for rebuilding the structures. There is no wood in the cabins. They are all aluminum, concrete, steel and fiberglass. The result is termite-proof buildings. And to deal with the threat of flooding, the cabins float on pontoons, and are able to rise and fall with the tide.

The over-water cabins offer a unique opportunity to fish off the porch or watch for birds and alligators. And the large screened porch keeps the flying insects away as you enjoy a quiet evening on the Bayou. Weather permitting, you can expect to watch the sun rise over the marsh and enjoy a star-filled sky on clear nights.

In addition to being a top spot for fishing, there are more than 3 miles of nature trails that zig-zag through the forested areas of this state park. And early Spring fills the trails with an explosion of yellow wildflowers. During the summer months, Bayou Segnette has a popular wave pool with a playground and a large picnic area.

This website is not affiliated with the office of Louisiana State Parks. You can get reservation information from the state park’s reservations site: https://reservations.gooutdoorslouisiana.com/FacilityDetails.aspx?facID=37

When I stay there the cabin had two bedrooms. One with a queen size bed and the second bedroom with four bunkbeds. One bathroom.
