Fontainebleau State Park in Mandeville is only a short 45-minute drive from downtown New Orleans. It’s also the state’s most visited park. And after sunset, stay on the beach to enjoy a star-filled sky above the distant lights of the city.

spend the day or a couple of weeks

This park features a sandy beach with swimming in Lake Pontchartrain, a splash pad, fishing and several miles of hiking. Park trails take you from thick forests to a long boardwalk over a sprawling saltwater marsh. Wild deer are frequently spotted wandering through the woods, campgrounds and picnic areas.

Overnight visitors can stay in one of 12 over-water cabins on the edge of Lake Pontchartrain. And if you prefer camping, the park has more than 200 campsites for RV’s, campers and tents, as well as new “glamping” accomodations.

Finding history at fontainebleau state park

This Louisiana State Park is filled with the history of ancient people who inhabited the site on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain 2,500 years ago. And more recently, French Creole nobleman Bernard de Marigny operated a sugar plantation at Fontainebleau in the early 1800’s.

The day use area also features a grove of old giant live oak trees. These beautiful moss-draped trees are a popular spot for taking family pictures. But the alley of trees is also the former site of cabins for the enslaved people who worked on Marigny’s plantation.
