“Work won’t hurt you at all”

L. W. “Knot” Farrington of Metairie passed away on August 19, 2025—just eleven days before what would have been his 106th birthday. It’s hard not to marvel at the nearly 106 years of a life so vividly lived, marked by grit, ingenuity, and an uncanny ability to remain active both in mind and body.

In the 1950’s, Farrington was building and driving a race car so powerful it broke the 200‑mph barrier on the Bonneville Salt Flats. His custom-built Thunderbird, which reached nearly 242 mph, is now a centerpiece of the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Museum. The sleek, cinnamon-colored car is a testament to his love of racing, his daring and mechanical skill. Click here to learn more about Farrington’s record-breaking career.

a testament to hard work

Even as he passed the age of 100, Farrington embodied a spirit of vitality that inspired all who knew him. At age 104, he still drove himself to breakfast with his longtime friend Benny Harrell, planting vegetables in his garden and mowing his own lawn. He tackled every task with pride and precision, “I want to do it right,” he’d say, “because it makes me feel a hell of a lot better”. Click here to see Farrington’s 105th birthday celebration.

When asked about the secret to his long life, his answer was simple and earnest: “Work won’t hurt you at all”. I feel deeply honored to have counted such a remarkable man among my friends. Knot’s humor, craftsmanship, work ethic and joy in life live on for those of us who knew him.
